Battlebot Motor Gearbox
I want to build a battlebot. What I wanna know is: Does a DC motor require a gearbox or does it not?
If you guys are Battlebot experts, please let me know if that I want to build a battlebot, I need motors, right? So I want an Okay motor, but I want to know: is a gearbox required to build a Decent battlebot? Or is it just an upgrade. PLEASE ANSWER! I NEED HELP! 
I am not a battlebot expert, but I do a lot of work with various dc motors. If I understand the question, you want to couple the dc motor directly to the drivetrain. This is ok, but you will need to do some calculations to make sure that the motor has adequate torque to move the machine based on size and weight. If you are using wheels, you will want to experiment with different diameters as this will effect the performance curve of the motor. Motor speed can be controlled using a resistor. I would start with a high torque, low rpm motor and use large wheels to acheive a high travel speed. A 12" diameter wheel will travel 1 mile in 1680 revolutions. If your desired max speed is 10 mph, you would need a motor capable of about 300 rpm which in the world of electric motors is very slow. Hope this helps.
