What determines the catagory of an automobile as 'car' or SUV?
What determines the catagory of an automobile as 'car' or SUV? I have a small SUV, the RAV4. A friend has a Toyota Matrix and thinks it's also an SUV I say it's a car but I'm not 'car savy' enought to explain what the diffence is. I think maybe something with the wheelbase or body frame??
Basically, the traditional SUVs are built on heavier truck frames than the lighter vehicles, such as the Subaru's, which are built on car frames. For example the Dodge Durango is built on Dodges mid size Dodge Dakota truck frame.The Explorer is built on the Ford Ranger frame, and the Ford Excursion, and Lincoln Navigator is built on the F150 Ford pick up frame and suspension. The Chevy Tahoe's, the newer Trail Blazers, the old Blazers, ext, are all built on GM truck platforms. Imagine, put carpet in back, and extra seat or two, and a metal top instead of a camper shell, and jack up the price another 15%. Good old American Automotive know how. I belive the RAV 4 is built on a smaller Toyota or Subaru, or Saturn car body. Toyota, Saturn, Subaru and GM is collaberating together on many of these small cars, and recreational vehicles.

What kind of car or suv should i buy...?
My budget is around $8,000, as this will be my first car. I was wondering if there are any sporty cars out there or small SUV's that get decent gas milage and are reliable. I would like to find an automobile that has less than 80,000 miles on it. I really like subaru and anything sporty with a manual transmission.
The reliable sporty cars are:
Toyota’s Scion tC, with a 2009 Auto Reliability GPA of 3.36 over a 5-year data history,
The Honda Civic Si, with a 2010 Auto Reliability GPA of 3.29 over a 9-year data history.
The Subaru Impreza WRX STi falls some below the Civic Si, with a 2009 Auto Reliability GPA of 3.00 over a 6-year data history.
The reliable, fuel-efficient SUVs are:
The Honda Element, with a 2010 Auto Reliability GPA of 3.94 over a 7-year data history,
The 4-cylinder Toyota RAV4, with a 2010 Auto Reliability GPA of 3.88 over a 10-year data history,
The Honda CR-V, with a 2010 Auto Reliability GPA of 3.63 over a 10-year data history.
The nonturbo Subaru Forester falls some below the CR-V, with a 2010 Auto Reliability GPA of 3.13 over a 10-year data history, and older models earn Consumer Reports' Much-Worse-Than-Average rating in the Engine Major category.
