The battery is dead so that is why you start the charge rate low.
If the batter is not sealed make sure it has enough water. Do not charge it with the battery completely connected to the car---remove the negative black cable.

What do I do with the + and - prongs when:
A: the unit is charging and
B: when I am just storing it
If they touch obviously they are going to spark so I have them spread apart but I don't really feel comfortable leaving them unattented...Its a motomaster automatic. thanks
I would assume that you would unplug it when you are not using it. My workbench battery charger that is on all the time, I have a thin piece of wood that I clip the leads to when i am not charging a battery. they just hang there until I bring another battery in for recharge.
