Practical English Usage $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Practical English Usage is a standard reference book aimed at foreign learners of English and their teachers written by Michael Swan. Published by Oxford University Press, it has sold over 1.5 million copies since the first edition was published in 1980. A new, and greatly extended second edition was published in 1995. It features basic descriptions of English grammar and usage as well as highlighting various words which for some reasons are difficult to use by nonnative speakers. Although the model is basically British English, it explains some of the stylistic differences between British and American usage. In his Acknowledgements for the first edition, Swan refers to the aid given him by various standard reference books in particular, the splendid A Grammar of Contemporary English, by Quirk, Greenbaum, Leech and Svartvik (Longman 1972), and in the second edition, to the monumental Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language (Longman 1985), by the same authors. Otaku is derived from a Japanese term for anothers house or family ( otaku) which is also used as an honorific secondperson pronoun. The modern slang form, which is distinguished from the older usage by being written only in hiragana or katakana ( or, less frequently, ), or rarely in r maji, appeared in the 1980s. In the anime Macross, first aired in 1982, the term was used by Lynn Minmay as an honorific term. It appears to have been coined by the humorist and essayist Akio Nakamori in his 1983 series, printed in the lolicon magazine Manga Burikko. Animators like Haruhiko Mikimoto and Sh ji Kawamori used the term among themselves as an honorific secondperson pronoun since the late 1970s. Rekijo are female otaku interested in Japanese history.
