Any tips on overcoming fear...?
i like to travel by air, but i hate flying.
its quick, but i am terrified of heights. last time i was on the plane i couldnt get my nerves calmed down. i couldnt sleep or anything. it felt my my senses went into hyper-awareness and i heard every change in the noises of the engine, felt every little bump and shake. every time it seemed like there was an alteration in the sound of the plane, my stomach would drop, i'd skip a beat and my face turn real hot. my heart pounded and i was gripping my armrest because i couldnt get the thought out of my head that there was nothing underneath me.
i play my ipod and nintendo ds to occupy myself, but when i had to turn them off, i was uncomfortable and afraid.
please give me any advice to stop this! i know flying is safe, but i need help with this personal fear.
You are not all that unusual. Plenty of people are anxious about flying. Actually, you are incredibly brave. It takes a lot of courage to fly when you fear it. So, you have already overcome the fear. What you now need to do, is decrease its effects on you.
First of all, you need to understand where that fear comes from. You are mistaken if you think it is a fear of heights. People with acrophobia are rarely affected by flying. Plenty of people afraid of flying have no fear of heights.
Most people who get anxiety about flying are somewhat claustrophobic and the enclosed environment causes them anxiety or more commonly, they hate surrendering all control.
For the claustrophobic, they need to do what you are doing. Escape into a different reality. For people who have a problem with control it is more difficult. All they can do is accept it.
Acceptance is hard to achieve. It is a matter of picking your battles. As the old saying goes:"Grant me the courage to change the things I can, the patience to accept the things I cannot change and the wisdom to know the difference."
When we fly in an airplane we are relying on the engineers who designed it, the people who built it, the ground crews that maintain it and the flight crews that control it. But, we have no way to control any of that. We are in thier hands. So, have the wisdom to realize that whether the flight is completely successful, has a problem or crashes into the ground, all the worry and all the anxiety in the world will make no difference. So, why waste the energy?
Allow that surge of energy you feel to morph into excitement about the trip. Learn to enjoy the act of flying. Surrender to that which you have no control of anyway. It is liberating. Let go!
