Active Wheelchair Users

Why is being a wheelchair user considered such a bad thing?
In today's society people who use wheelchairs are able to access most of the same places as everyone else, do almost everything etc. Why do so many people look with pity and say things that indicate they feel sorry for me, or think I'm too young/pretty/active to be in a wheelchair and isn't it a shame? (I'm not even going to go into why people shout slowly at me or ask whoever I might be with questions about what I want...)
I mean someone in a wheelchair because of paraplegia. I have excellent balance and upper body function and am a very active wheelchair user, I just get fed up with people's pity.
Hi Me,
If you could wave a magic wand and be able to get around without the use of a wheel chair, would you? I'm guessing your answer is yes. I believe most of the able-bodied who aren't routinely around people in chairs feel both sympathy for you and a bit uncomfortable. The fact that they make eye contact and talk to you is a step forward from common responses a few decades ago when the disabled were more likely to be kept out of sight and away from society.
Some years ago, at the college where I taught, we had a large facility nearby for "alternately-abled" folks... kind of clumsy language, eh? Many of them started attending classes at the college. At first our able-bodied students didn't seem to know how to interact and often avoided social interaction or even eye-contact. Over a few years, as people in chairs became common place, I could see the college culture change. People in chairs were fitting into the student culture and able-bodied students seemed very comfortable having them in classes, clubs, and social settings. I have great hopes that something similar is coming about in the culture at large. Until then, you'll just have to put up with something less then full social integration. Best wishes.
