Accessible Wheelchair Travel

A question for people that use wheelchairs?
I noticed that this restaurant that I went to today didn't have wheelchair access. It never occurred to me before that there were still places like that. What's the farthest you've ever traveled to go to a place just to have discovered it wasn't wheelchair accessible? Have you ever wasted 4 hours driving to a place just to discover that you can't get in?
@Loughlin
How does that work? Do you give him like a piggy back ride and then go back for the chair or do you carry the chair with him in it? Either way, that's some muscle power and friendship!
I have a buddy who is in a wheelchair, if this happens I just pick up the wheelchair.

How can I help my nearly immobile mom travel?
My mom was diagnosed with ALS (Lough Gehrig's disease) 3 years ago. It took so long to get a diagnosis and get her the care that she needed that we put off the dream of traveling until now. The only problem is that she is nearly immobile. For medical purposes she is bedridden, but she is far from it. She has a wheelchair that she operates herself.
My sister, mom, and I would like to go somewhere, preferably an international destination, but we don't even know how to start planning for a trip like this. We definitely need assistance to get her ready for her day/night (bed baths, dressing, commode transfer, wheelchair transfer, etc). We would also need equipment such as a hospital bed, a lift for her transfer, a fully accessible bathroom, and whatever else I forget to mention.
Is there a travel company that specializes in providing a CNA for a patient as well as plan a trip?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
